Britain in Bloom

Making Sunderland "blooming lovely" is all in a day's work for the BID - which is why we were delighted to be able to support Sunderland City Council's submissions to Northumbria in Bloom and Britain in Bloom.

We used our green fingers to sponsor more than 60 hanging baskets in Frederick, Olive and Derwent streets along with sponsoring two large planters which will be located at one of the gateway’s to the city at Albion Place.

Our Chief Executive, Ken Dunbar, met with RHS National Britain in Bloom judges in August to discuss the plans to develop green spaces within the BID area and encourage local businesses to use window boxes to brighten areas of the city centre.

A little bit of floral magic of our own was thrown in, as we commissioned an artist to recreate the RHS Britain in Bloom 50 Year celebration emblem in Sunniside, which the judges visited as part of their tour of the city.

We're delighted to say it made a great impression! Sunderland won the Large City category and was awarded gold in each of the three judging criteria areas-:

  • horticultural achievement
  • environmental responsibility
  • community participation

There's no doubt all the city centre businesses came up smelling of roses - here's to more success next year.
