To mark International Women's Day, we asked some inspiring local businesswomen the challenges they might have faced getting to where they are now. Amanda is the co-owner of Fat Unicorn Kitchen & Stores, her husband and her have worked in hospitality for many years and have always dreamed of having their own place one day.

WHAT DOES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY MEAN TO YOU?

For me, it's a day where women are celebrated and acknowledged for their achievements outside of the stereotypical roles.

HAVE YOU FACED ANY BARRIERS OR OBSTACLES WITHIN YOUR CAREER?

To answer this question truthfully, I would have to say yes, but for every toxic workplace where harassment is evident, there are dozens of places where it will not be tolerated. How each person deals with those situations varies massively, but I have always been a big advocate of telling people never to stay where they are not valued.

ARE THERE ANY ASPECTS OF GENDER INEQUALITY THAT YOU FEEL SHOULD BE CHALLENGED?

An aspect of gender inequality I would like to see challenged more regularly is the notion that it's perfectly normal to continually comment on a woman who has to be bold in a role as a b**** or must be that time of the month. In contrast, a man would receive automatic praise for being assertive and being a strong leader.

HOW SHOULD WE CHOOSE TO NEGATE THE STEREOTYPES OF FEMINISM IN THE WORKPLACE?

I was brought up by a strong-minded person who reinforced that I should stand up not just for myself but others too. So for me, the best way to counteract stereotypes of feminism in the workplace is to stand your ground, debate your point of view and help stand up for others in similar situations.

IF YOU COULD PASS ON ONE PIECE OF VALUABLE ADVICE, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

Surround yourself with people who support and believe in you and inspire you to be a better version of yourself. There is nothing better or more encouraging than being able to bounce ideas off another person who whole heartily believes in what you want to do. It is also a fantastic feeling to be that person for someone else.
