NATIONAL VEGETARIAN WEEK IS IN THE BEST POSSIBLE TASTE….

Wednesday 08 May 2019

SUNDERLAND residents are being asked to support the city’s restaurants and try out their vegetarian options.

Next week (May 13 – 19) is National Vegetarian Week, with a number of eateries using the event to showcase their meat-free offerings.

And now Sunderland BID is hoping that people will get behind the event and use it to sample a range of alternative dishes.

The BID, along with the Independent and the city’s sustainable food delivery service, Sunshine Co-Operative – are driving awareness of the week and encouraging people to take part.

The week will see the city’s Nando’s at High Street West unveil its new vegetarian menu, while other favourites such as 2 Church Lane, Mexico 70 and Holmeside Coffee at the Winter Gardens have created a special menu for the event, along with their regular vegan and veggie options.

Other city centre venues such as Port of Call at Park Lane offer diners a number of vegetarian choices, as does the Engine Room at the Fire Station.

The week also puts the spotlight on cafes such as The Good Apple at Derwent Street, which is the city’s only vegan and vegetarian café.

Many of the cities key restaurants have got behind the event, with a number of offers available which can be accessed via

“The growth of vegetarianism and veganism across the country is reflected in what restaurants in Sunderland are offering their diners,” said Sharon Appleby, Head of Business Operations at Sunderland BID.

“It’s fantastic to see that our restaurants and cafes have embraced this trend and are giving their customers some really exciting alternative options, which we hope that people will try.

“The focus of National Vegetarian Week is to think about other choices and it’s a great chance for anyone who might not usually consider this option to try something different.”
