Our new Spring Trail is blooming with good vibes.
The Sunderland Experience app enables you to enjoy seasonal events and adventures in the City.
Our next event is the ‘Spring Surprises Trail’, available between 29 March and 30 April 2021.
This trail has been designed for you to enjoy the City Centre in a safe and socially-distanced way.
You can download the trail via a bespoke app on to any smartphone, which will guide you to the various locations across Sunderland city centre.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Download the app
You will be able to download the 'Sunderland Experience' app from your app store.
Use the map to track down the seven virtual augmented reality seasonal scenes and characters in the City Centre.
Exciting augmented reality technology alongside a GPS enabled map which tracks your location in real-time, will help you explore the city centre like never before.
Use the map in the app to find and collect all our virtual augmented reality seasonal scenes and characters at different locations across the City.
Capture and share moments with family and friends as you interact with our fun virtual characters along the route in a safe, socially distanced way.

Unfortunately, some phones are just not AR compatible, which is why we have a mixed trail of light installations and AR Christmas characters for you to enjoy.
STAYING SAFE, WHILST ON THE TRAIL
This trail has been designed for you to enjoy the City Centre in a safe and socially-distanced way.
Please ensure you adhere to the current government COVID-19 restrictions when using this app out and about in the City Centre.
Please be aware of others around you, exercise caution regarding the safety of your mobile phone device and, when engaging with the augmented reality characters, make sure you maintain social distancing from other participants and be aware of road safety and the potential slips, trips and falls when observing content on your mobile device.
The GPS enabled map in the app will help you find and capture all of the seasonal characters you meet along the trail. This application uses an internet/data connection to download map data and make use of GPS to help you find your location on the trail route. The app will attempt to use as little data as possible. Please ensure you have the bill-payers permission before using this app.
No information regarding yourself will be stored or shared, so any use of the app is completely private. It is up to you if you want to share any photos you capture via social media or sign up with your email address to be kept up to date on future events and news from Sunderland BID. Simply go to ‘Sign Up' on the main menu.

Can I share the characters on social media?
Yes, the app is entirely free and has no in-app purchases.
Game-based and AR (Augmented Reality) apps do use quite a lot of battery, so make sure your device has a full charge before you embark on your trail. Perhaps make sure someone else in your group has a device with them in case the battery runs low, and you need a phone to coordinate your return home!
The app will download with a four or 5G connection but, because of the AR, it is quite large. We recommended you download the app where you have a WIFI connection if at all possible.
Yes. However adults should use their judgement, but we believe the app is appropriate for children aged at least six years and up. For young children, please ensure the app is used with the supervision of an adult.
GPS has been used to track your location within the City Centre. On the map view, you’ll see an icon moving along the trail route (the icon is you!) and this will help you find your way along the trail and identify where the real and virtual surprises are hiding.
You'll find the offers in the menu of the app once you have downloaded it, you can either screenshot it or show them the offer directly from the app.
AR places a digital character into the real world setting in front of you. The app will automatically open your camera view to trigger the digital monsters. It will look for a flat surface to put the character onto so please follow the instructions carefully and point your device at the floor before looking at and enjoying the virtual characters.
Yes. The app lets you capture an image of your character once you’ve found it. Try and catch a great photo of your or a family member with the surprises and share your favourite pictures online using @sunderlandexperience and #sunderlandexperience.
